Barre classes are becoming hugely popular in Australia and around the world, and appeals to a wide age group. The reason it has become so popular is that you feel pretty amazing after each class and it’s a whole lot of fun too! There are different formats of Barre such as Extend Barre and Booty Barre.
Booty Barre was created by Tracey Mallet and is a combination of pilates, dance and yoga designed to improve your flexibility and sculpt your physique. Through practicing regular Barre you will experience the following benefits:
1. Strength and tone
Barre class is a full body workout! You will target your muscles from all different angles. You work your legs, arms, butt, abs and back in each class and you will find tiny muscles hurting that you didn’t even know you had! Each class will improve your strength and sculpt and tone your body from head to toe.
You do not need to be highly flexible to participate in a Barre class. There are so many stretches incorporated into each class that you will find that your flexibility and range of motion will improve over time and your body will feel amazing.
The first Barre class that you ever attend will probably knock the wind out of you and leave you feeling breathless! However hang in there it gets easier. Rather than focusing on large compound movements (such as squats), Barre classes focus on tiny isometric movements (such as plank). Your endurance will improve over time. The class structure is as follows:
- Warm up of the lower body and some mat work
- An arms section
- Barre sections focusing on the thighs and butt in particular
- A core section and stretching on the mat
You will engage your core during a full Barre class, as well as engaging your thighs and butt. This will help improve your posture and assist with improving any lower back pain that you be experiencing. A lot of lower back pain caused by sitting for long periods of time, can be helped with strengthening your core muscles.
5. Body co-ordination
In the very first Barre class that you attend you may feeling like you have two left feet and zero rhythm in your body. That’s completely normal! But hang in there it gets better! Your instructor will constantly be giving you cues and instructions to follow on how to position your body. This means you will become highly aware of each part of your body that you are working during each section of the class, and your co-ordination will improve as you learn to control each part of your body.
So what are you waiting for, come and join a PTV Barre class Thursdays at 6am and every second Saturday at 7.45am in Scarborough.
